What to Wear to A Flying Dress Photoshoot So You Look Fabulous and Feel Comfortable

Wondering what to wear under a flying dress for your photoshoot? We get this question ALL the time! Since our dresses have an open section in the middle and different back designs, what you wear underneath can make a big difference in both your comfort and how the dress looks in your photos.

The good news is that you don’t need anything complicated. We recommend a few simple things that will help you feel secure while you’re moving around, walking, posing, and letting the dress fly. And because we’re usually shooting outdoors in New York, there are a couple of things you’ll want to keep in mind that you might not think about at first!

Here’s exactly what we recommend wearing under your Flying Dress.

👙 What to Wear on Top

Wondering how to keep the girls in place and looking their best? Here’s what we recommend to wear under your flying dress on top.

Sticky Bra

For extra support, we recommend wearing a sticky bra underneath your flying dress. This is especially helpful because the middle of the dress is open slightly, so a traditional bra will be visible from most angles.

A sticky bra gives you the support you want without having straps or a back band showing through the dress. Just make sure you choose one that you’re comfortable wearing and that gives you the amount of support you need.

Fashion Tape

If you don’t want to wear a sticky bra, fashion tape is another great option.

Fashion tape can help keep everything in place while you’re moving around and posing, without having to wear a traditional bra underneath. This can be especially useful depending on the specific dress and how much coverage you prefer.

We recommend bringing some with you even if you plan on wearing a sticky bra. It’s always nice to have an extra option if you need a little additional security during your shoot!

🚫 What About a Regular Bra?

We don’t recommend wearing a regular bra underneath most of our dresses because of the open middle and the different back designs.

Depending on the way your dress is tied, the straps or back of a regular bra may be visible. If you need more support than a sticky bra provides, let us know when choosing your dress and we’ll help you figure out the best option.

🩲 What to Wear Under the Bottom

This is something you definitely don’t want to forget! We recommend wearing small shorts underneath your flying dress, preferably in a nude color or a shade that matches your dress.

Why? Wind!

Our dresses are designed to move, and we’re often shooting outside where there can be quite a bit of wind. While the dress flying dramatically through the air makes for AMAZING photos, you don’t want to spend the entire shoot worrying about whether you’re covered underneath. Small fitted shorts give you an extra layer of coverage and peace of mind while still allowing the dress to move freely.

Nude is usually the safest choice, but if you can find a pair that closely matches the color of your dress, that’s great too.

👠 What Shoes Should You Wear?

We actually recommend bringing two pairs of shoes to your Flying Dress photoshoot.

Comfortable Shoes

First, bring a pair of shoes that you can comfortably walk around in.

You’ll be moving between locations, walking to different shooting spots, and spending quite a bit of time on your feet. And here’s the best part: you won’t see your shoes in a lot of the photos!

Because the dress is so long and we’re constantly working with the fabric, there are plenty of shots where your shoes are completely hidden. So don’t feel like you need to suffer through the entire shoot in uncomfortable shoes just because you want heels in your photos.

Your Photo Shoes

For the photos where your shoes are visible, bring a second pair that you love.

I personally usually wear heels, and I recommend choosing a nude pair or one that matches the color of your dress. This keeps the overall look cohesive and lets the dress remain the star of the photo.

But you don’t have to stick to neutrals! You can also use your shoes as an opportunity to add a pop of color. If you’re wearing a dress in a neutral or simple color, a bright shoe can be such a fun detail. Don’t be afraid to make the look your own!

💎 What About Accessories?

When it comes to accessories, this is completely up to you!

Some women love adding earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, or other personal touches, while others prefer to let the dress and the photos speak for themselves. Both are great.

Wear whatever makes you feel confident and comfortable. If you have a favorite piece of jewelry or an accessory that has special meaning to you, this can also be a really fun way to personalize your shoot.

And don’t worry if you don’t have anything in mind yet. We’re planning to offer accessories in the future that you can add to your Flying Dress experience.

💇‍♀️ What Should You Do With Your Hair?

This is another thing to think about before your shoot, especially because we’re shooting outside in New York.

Wind is part of the Flying Dress experience! We love using it to create movement in the dress, but it can obviously affect your hair too. If we’re shooting near the water, you’ll want to expect even more wind.

That doesn’t mean you need to choose a super-secure hairstyle. Just keep the weather in mind when deciding how you want to wear your hair. If you know your hair tends to go wild in the wind, you may want to choose a style that will still look good with a little movement.

And honestly, sometimes the wind-blown hair ends up making the photos even better!

🧦 What to Wear Under a Flying Dress in Cold Weather

Flying Dress photoshoots aren’t just for summer! If you’re booking a shoot during the colder months, you can add tights or fleece-lined tights underneath your dress to help keep you warm.

Fleece-lined tights are especially great because they are basically very warm leggings that look like regular tights from the outside. You get the warmth without having a thick layer that changes the look of the dress.

You can choose nude tights if you want them to blend in, or match them to your dress depending on the color and style.

Of course, New York weather can be unpredictable, so we’d also recommend bringing a warm coat or extra layers for the time between photos. You can bundle up while we’re moving between locations and take everything off when it’s time to shoot!

✨ A Few More Things to Keep in Mind

The most important thing to remember is that you want to feel comfortable and confident. There isn’t one perfect way to style your Flying Dress look, and you can absolutely add your own personality to it.

For the best experience, we’d recommend:

  • Sticky bra or fashion tape: Choose whichever makes you feel the most secure.
  • Small shorts: Nude or matching the dress for extra coverage on windy days.
  • Two pairs of shoes: Comfortable shoes for walking and a second pair for the photos.
  • Accessories: Bring whatever accentuates your style.
  • Hair: Keep NYC weather and wind near the water in mind.
  • Cold weather: Add tights or fleece-lined tights underneath the dress.
  • Extra layers: Bring a coat or warm clothing for between shots during colder months.

And remember, you don’t have to have every detail figured out before you arrive. We’re here to help you throughout the experience, including getting the dress ready and making sure you feel comfortable in it.

We’re also working on adding accessories and sleeves to our Flying Dress collection in the future, so there will be even more ways to customize your look!

Final Thoughts on What to Wear Under a Flying Dress

Figuring out what to wear under a flying dress really comes down to three things: support, coverage, and comfort.

A sticky bra or fashion tape can help with the top, small shorts give you peace of mind underneath the skirt, and bringing two pairs of shoes means you don’t have to sacrifice comfort just to get the perfect photo. From there, everything else is about making the look feel like YOU.

And don’t forget that the whole point of a Flying Dress shoot is to have fun! The dress is going to move, the wind is probably going to blow, and we’re going to be running around getting all kinds of different shots. Come prepared, but don’t stress about everything being perfect. That’s what we’re there for!
